What's the difference between a suit and a tuxedo?
The use of satin is the main difference between a suit and a tuxedo. While both suits and tuxedos are meant for formal events, the latter tends to have satin on the lapels and on the side of the trousers. Classic tuxedo accessories include a self-tied bowtie and waistcoat, while suits are formal and yet informal in that sense. Long ties and cufflinks are now considered standard staples for tuxedos, besides a dinner jacket, a matched pair of pants, and formal shoes.
When you are choosing a tux, it essentially means that the event is a formal one and probably comes with a dress code. If the dress code says that you must wear a black tie, you should go for a bow tie. For more relaxed and personal events, you can go for a necktie. Wearing a necktie is pretty acceptable for most occasions.
When to wear a tuxedo?
Tuxedos are meant for formal events, also known as "black tie" events. If you have an invitation that it is a black-tie event, it essentially means that you are expected to wear a tux. Most such events happen in the evening, which is why parts of the tux are called dinner jackets, dinner shirts, and dinner pants. Tuxedos can be worn at weddings, especially evening weddings. When there is no dress code, it is safe to assume that a tux is a safe choice.
